Inspired by a profound call from the Royal Bafokeng king (Kgosi Leruo Molotlegi) to create a future beyond mining, AQUASOV was born from a vision to showcase the land’s deeper wealth, its pure, flowing water. Long before the first settlement, beneath the earth of Phokeng, life was already thriving through ancient underground aquifers. Today, we bottle that heritage and offer it to the world.

Sourced from pristine underground springs near Rustenburg, in the traditional village of Phokeng, every bottle of AQUASOV carries with it the essence and story of a people who dared to think beyond minerals, a people committed to excellence, sustainability, and building a lasting legacy.

STORY BEHIND THE NATION THAT   INSPIRED THE BIRTH OF AQUASOV

The Royal Bafokeng Nation (RBN) is a Setswana-speaking community in the North West Province of South Africa, centered around Phokeng near Rustenburg. Their history is distinct because they are one of the few African communities that legally own large tracts of land and mineral rights.

In the 19^th century, under King Mokgatle (ruled 1834–1891), the Bafokeng began to buy back land from white farmers and colonial authorities.

At that time, Africans could not legally own land directly. The Bafokeng circumvented this by using missionaries and church trusts as proxies to register land in their name, while retaining beneficial ownership.

This proactive land-purchasing strategy meant that by the late 1800s, they had secured significant territory in the Rustenburg region.

During apartheid, when land dispossession was widespread, their legal purchase records and missionary trust structures protected much of their territory from forced removal.

The land they secured later proved to be rich in platinum group metals. Rustenburg sits on the Bushveld Igneous Complex, the world’s largest platinum deposit.

Mining began in the 20^th century. Unlike many black communities who lost mineral rights, the Bafokeng retained legal claims to their land and royalties from mining operations.

The community negotiated with mining companies, notably Impala Platinum (Implats), to secure royalties and equity stakes. Disputes often went to court, but the Bafokeng consistently defended their rights.

 

In the democratic era, they established Royal Bafokeng Holdings (RBH), an investment company managing royalties and equity across multiple sectors (mining, finance, telecoms, property).

Today the Royal Bafokeng Nation is often called the “richest tribe in Africa.” Their wealth stems from platinum revenues, but they have diversified into long-term investments. They also run a development arm, the Royal Bafokeng Administration, which funds infrastructure, schools, healthcare, and community development.

To this day, the nation is still growing stronger and more vigilant in preserving their heritage and culture under the rule of their King, Kgosi Leruo Tshekedi Molotlegi.

Phokeng Sydwell Khunou

Growing up in the historic village of Phokeng, where rivers and aquifers have flowed for generations, Phokeng Sydwell Khunou has always carried the spirit of the Royal Bafokeng Nation in his heart. A proud son of this land, he was profoundly moved when the King challenged the youth to find new ways to sustain and uplift their community beyond mining.

Inspired by this call, Phokeng pursued a qualification in Biotechnology at Tshwane University of Technology, determined to learn the science behind food and beverage production. For nearly two decades, he honed his skills with some of the world’s leading beverage companies, always holding onto a dream; to one day create a product that would showcase the enduring wealth of his homeland.

 

AQUASOV was born from this vision: a luxury bottled water brand that captures the essence of Royal Bafokeng heritage; sovereign, pure, and timeless. More than a brand, AQUASOV is a legacy, crafted with perseverance, excellence, and dignity. It is a philosophy for those who move and reign supreme, but with great silence.
